And suddenly, you saw weeds and even some bare spots on what used to be your perfect lawn. As landscaping professionals here in Central Massachusetts, we see this all the time. While most of us enjoy the seasons that come in New England, we do see a fair number of lawns that need repairing after a hot summer.
Our experts recommend planting your lawn in the late summer. It’s the best time of the year to do so and here are a few reasons why.
Warm soil and perfect daytime temperatures
One of the best reasons to plant grass seed and repair your lawn in the late summer is because here in the northeast we continue to have warm soil and we have some of the best daytime temperatures that are great for seed germination. Daytime temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees are perfect conditions to lay down new grass seed. And the cooler evening temperatures allow for much better germination for seed growth.
Late summer provides enough time for seed growth
If you have the proper soil conditions and have planted your grass seed properly, you can expect to see new seed growth between 7 and 21 days. Planting grass seed in the late summer allows you plenty of time to build a proper foundation for a new lawn before the frost settles here in the northeast. If you plant too late in the fall, you may end up not seeing anything, so timing is everything.
You’ll have less weeds to compete with
If you notice during the summer, you probably had your share of weeds trying to take over your lawn. Because weeds thrive on the heat, planting in the Fall is one of your best options because you’ll have less weeds to contend with your newly planted grass. Between that and the proper soil preparation, you’ll see fantastic results next spring.
Professional landscapers can offer choices
We talked to many homeowners who have struggled with getting that nice green lawn year after year. So if you’ve decided to plant new grass in late summer, you may want to seek the advice of local professional landscapers. A professional can prepare the area properly, which includes soil preparation, and they can recommend the proper seeding method that will produce the best results.
